A man in Ireland has been found guilty of manslaughter for stabbing his housemate during an argument over a poker game. Polish national Tomasz Paszkiewicz pleaded not guilty for murder charges, but he did plead guilty for manslaughter. The victim was his housemate and fellow Polish national Marek Swider.

The incident took place during the early hours of January 1, 2018 in Ballyjamesduff, County Cavan, Ireland.

Paszkiewicz was working in a meat plant and used a knife from work to stab his housemate. He had lost €500 (£448; $562), which led to him stabbing the victim twice. Paszkiewicz made several admissions about the killing on the first day of the trial.

There was a row about the poker game and the attacker invited Swider outside, where he stabbed him. The accused said that he was not thinking when he stabbed his housemate, demonstrating the lack of intent.

Another man who was present testified that the atmosphere was friendly up until the row broke out. The witness, a Czech national, described how the deceased had won the money but said that Paszkiewicz quickly grabbed the cash and stuffed it into his pocket. The deceased had responded by saying: “Wait, that’s all my money.”

Subsequent investigation

The victim was taken to a hospital, but surgery was unsuccessful. The postmortem showed that the cause of death was two stab wounds in the abdomen and the chest. The murder weapon, a boning knife that had Paszkiewicz’s employee number engraved on it, was found at the crime scene. However, Paszkiewicz was not there when the police arrived.

He was later found going across the country in a bus, after which he ultimately handed himself in at one of the Cork City police stations. At first, the officer on duty thought that it was a hoax when Paszkiewicz admitted to killing his housemate three days earlier.

Paszkiewicz said: “We played cards. I drink a lot of vodka. I lost €500. I went crazy. I took this money and left. I don’t know how I had the knife in my hand. We were talking. Then I took the knife and pushed.”

Cavan police went to Cork to conduct an interview. The defendant spoke about his knowledge of using knives, having worked in the meat plant boning the heads of cows for many years.

He told police that he did not remember getting his knife from the kitchen during the argument, but said that he probably did. Speaking about stabbing the victim, Paszkiewicz said: “This is not me. Power move my hand over. I don’t decide I go stab him. I look at his face but I don’t see his face… I don’t have any thoughts in my brain. I not decide move my hand to stab him.”

The jury deliberated for five hours before coming to a majority verdict that the defendant was not guilty of murder charges. Paszkiewicz was found guilty of manslaughter and will be remanded in custody until sentencing on July 15.

The UK & Ireland online poker rankings, provided by PocketFives.com, are up-to-date and it is still Conor “1_conor_b_1” Beresford who is far out in front in the United Kingdom, but Ireland has a brand new entry and they’ve gone straight into the number one spot.

Beresford is still 2,200 points ahead of Patrick “pleno1” Leonard in the UK’s rankings. Beresford seems to be putting in plenty of volume while running hot, which is a deadly combination.

Ireland

Last week, Beresford finished second in a $5,200 6-Max PKO High Rollers event at PokerStars for more than $70,000. He also won the $1,050 Wednesday High Roller for an additional $21,053. This pair of results comes only a week after Beresford padded his bankroll with scores of $239,652 and $378,205.

Leonard is doing everything in his power to reel in Beresford. The partypoker ambassador won sums of $14,247, $14,082 and $23,716 last week. Sandwiched between those impressive scores was a $180,982 prize, his reward for second-place in a $10,300 NLHE 8-Max event at PokerStars.

Tyler “Wonderboy222” Goatcher is another man in scintillating form. Goatcher has already a trio of partypoker POWERFEST events at partypoker but his latest big scores came at PokerStars. The Brighton-based grinder collected $15,122 for hs runner-up exit from the $530 Daily Supersonic before winning the $1,050 Daily Warm-Up for $25,864, also at PokerStars.

“B4NKR0LL3R” helped themselves to the $28,636 third-place prize of a $1,050 Sunday Warm-Up to hold onto fifth-place in the rankings.

A massive $107,480 went to Sam “SamSquid” Grafton after he finished third in a $5,200 NLHE 8-max High Roller in the PokerStars Turbo Series. This pushed Grafton to eighth in the UK and 62nd in the world, not a massive distance away from the 40th in the world rank he enjoyed in 2013.

The $1,050 buy-in High Roller tournaments at PokerStars are proving happy hunting grounds for British players. Not only did some of the aforementioned players finish in the top three places, Ben “jenbizzle” Jones took one down for $28,776.

UK-based Italian Mustapha “lasagnaaammm” Kanit also triumphed in two of these tournaments. The first won Kanit $49,610 with the other’s top prize weighing in at $23,897.

Lastly, a couple of shoutouts for Henri “Buehlero” Buehler and Jareth “jareath3542” East who have been tearing things up at GGPoker.

Buehler finished first, second, and third in a trio of Zodiac Main Events and High Rollers for the equivalent of $33,462, $13,724, and $10,065. East finished second in a GGSeries event for $16,916 and fourth in another for an additional $9,421.
